PSP’s Operation Crane Construction: Complete!

Last week was the final mile in the marathon that was our crane construction. We sprinted to the finish line with our final 30 cranes on Tuesday, totaling over 180 cranes all together! On Wednesday, we pierced and strung all 180 cranes so they were ready for installation next week. The teens were happy to end this stage of the project as it was by far the most tedious and consuming part. They were troopers though, as long as the ‘DJ’ kept playing music, they were folding.

Last step: installation! Because of logistics of the lobby space, the only time allowed to install our cranes will be during the day when it’s quiet, which will unfortunately keep the teens from participating in this crucial and rewarding step. Beau and I plan to film the installation and create a small 1-2 minute video to help them feel as involved as possible. The teens will also be creating a plaque of the installation’s process to hang in tandem with the cranes in the lobby. Can’t wait to see it up!

The D3 Lab is a collaboration between the Pearson Foundation's New Learning Institute, COMMONstudio design consultancy, and Nightingale Middle School in Los Angeles. It is one part idea lab, one part design and production facility, and one part "do tank." It is a place where students come to nurture and cultivate ideas, tackle big and small problems, and take action.
