Endless summer at D3@PSP!

This Minnesota weather just doesn’t quit! We’re a week into September with sky-high temperatures (90 degrees and rising!) as well as rising D3 attendance! Now that school’s in session, we’ve resorted to our usually-empty waiting list system. D3 is full of eager and energetic teens that already hold the program near and dear.

We’ve decided to take the opportunity of the clean turnover of teens to revisit our PSPieces project: a spatial re-design of a public PSP area. Teens began with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly activity and found notonly a lot of spaces they didn’t like, but some spaces they did like! Through digging deeper and brainstorming, they ultimately defined the lobby as the space that needed the most help. We prototyped three different options this week: to paint a mural on the ceiling, to create a spooky and decorative Halloween motif for the upcoming holiday, and lastly a (far-fetched) Xbox video gaming station. We as facilitators will help nudge the teens to define the most impactful and feasible idea to run with!

The D3 Lab is a collaboration between the Pearson Foundation's New Learning Institute, COMMONstudio design consultancy, and Nightingale Middle School in Los Angeles. It is one part idea lab, one part design and production facility, and one part "do tank." It is a place where students come to nurture and cultivate ideas, tackle big and small problems, and take action.
