D3 @ PSP: Movin’ On Up & Going to College

Teens eagerly attended D3 @ PSP – both days full with a waiting list. Teens continued their Movin’ On Up redesign project and went on a field trip to be presenters and give critiques to a college graphic design class!

     On Wednesday, teens arranged floor plans to adapt the lounge space to a D3 work space. Each teen made three floor plans, presented the one they liked the most to the group and practiced giving constructive feedback to one another.
Giving constructive feedback is an important skill to learn for ourselves and our community. To hear, “I like this,” feels good, but leaves a designer without direction for improvement. Teens used mad libs sheets to fill in the blanks of constructive feedback sentences to tell their peers what they thought of the layouts.
     This practice also helped prepare us for the field trip we took to a graphic design class at the University of Minnesota. The teens were asked to present their D3 process of creating the map for PSP’s guests. In front of a big class the teens proudly presented their map, explained the process, and answered questions. The college students were very impressed. Then they switched roles and listened to groups of the college students present their mapping projects and then gave a critique using their new skills. The college students were very grateful for their feedback. It seems after a bit of practice PSP teens have really gotten the hang of criticizing constructively!
     The teens felt really inspired by going to the University. As we left, one teen said, “See you in four years!” and another said they for sure wanted to go to college now.
